Description:
The Otolaryngology Unit gives urgent and elective ear, nose and throat care to adults and children, including: surgery of the ears, nose, sinuses (endoscopic surgery), mouth, throat, larynx, vocal cords and neck. In the area of ear surgery, we offer treatment for acute and chronic ear disease in children and adults, treatment of hearing problems, repair of ear drum perforations, diagnosis and treatment of dizziness, and other ear problems.

In the area of nose and sinuses, the unit has unique experience with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for treatment of acute and chronic sinonasal diseases. We manage polyps, nasal drainage, allergies, sinus headaches, nasal deformities (plastic surgery for the nose), benign and malignant tumors. The unit engages in surgical treatment for snoring and other respiratory sleep disorders.

In the area of voice and larynx: voice and hoarseness evaluation is accomplished in cooperation with our speech and hearing section. Microlaryngoscopy surgeries are done to treat the problem of vocal cord nodules. Treatment for benign and malignant tumors is performed following surgery for malignant tumors of the larynx; speech therapy is also given. Following total laryngectomy, the patient is usually treated with voice prothesis (TEP).

Surgery for children: tonsils, adenoids, ventilation tubes for the ears, and congenital cysts of the neck.

The speech and hearing section treats enunciation problems, speech delay, stuttering, speech disturbances after cerebral events and more. The hearing center performs hearing tests for children and adults and also BERA tests (functional recording of ascending brain stem auditory pathways).

Disorders of the Nose and Sinuses

The Unit takes special interest and has expertise in disorders of the nose and sinuses. Evaluation is accomplished for those suffering from nasal problems: drainage, nasal obstruction, paranasal sinus headaches. In some cases the patients undergo endoscopic surgery of the nose and sinuses to accomplish definitive treatment. In this type of surgery we clean the natural openings of sinuses and try to restore function and normal ventilation of the sinuses.
Research on chronic sinusitis and the connection to upper respiratory tract ciliary function was accomplished in our unit. Additional types of surgery performed include functional and cosmetic surgery of the nose (plastic surgery of the nose).

Another special interest is the treatment of nasal obstruction and snoring by radio-frequency (coblation).
