Description: The department provides all the general surgical services for the medical center, and its 3 sub-units (trauma, vascular surgery, and pediatric surgery)- providing specialized services in these fields. The range of departmental activities is similar to that of other general, vascular and pediatric surgery departments in Israel. In the field of minimally invasive surgery we perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy and preperitoneal laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. A considerable proportion of our patients are oncology patients; in the near future we plan to start utilizing lymphatic mapping and sentinel node biopsy techniques in the field of surgical oncology. The department runs follow-up and consultation clinics in general, pediatric and vascular surgery, as well as a breast clinic. We are affiliated with the B. Rappaport Faculty of Medicine of the Technion in Haifa and accredited for a full residency program in general surgery. We provide clinical clerkships for 5th and 6th year medical students, as well as elective programs for Israeli and foreign medical students. The staff members serve as mentors and instructors for MD theses, basic science and Masters in Surgery projects. The team also teaches surgery in the Mathews school of Nursing. Members of our staff serve as coordinators and moderators of the Friday morning Staff Meeting. Family consultation: Every day, following doctors' rounds, in the Physicians' room between 11-12:00.
