Description:
The Institute of Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases is affiliated with the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine,
The Technion, Haifa.
The Gastroenterology department functions in cooperation with other hospital departments, community clinics and under the patronage of the Israel Society for the Prevention of Cancer. The first endoscopies in Israel were performed here, as was the establishment of the first manometry clinic. The gastroenterology department is active in training and instruction of nurses and medical students providing, for the latter, guidance in the preparation of graduation research projects. In addition to the various services and activities provided, the department has undertaken many research projects including, among others, screening for colorectal tumors, epidemiology studies on Helicobacter pylori incidence, gastrointestinal evaluation of patients with iron deficiency anemia, Crohn's disease and pulmonary involvement, Helicobacter pylori and peptic disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comparison of colorectal cancer incidence among Jews and Arabs living in the same region, treatment of internal hemorrhoids, wireless capsule endoscopy, etc.

Video Capsule
The video capsule is routinely used in the GI unit for diagnosing diseases of the small bowel. Prof. Fireman was closely involved in the initial development and clinical application of the capsule. The GI Unit was one of the first places in the world and in Israel to utilize the capsule and its medical staff is one of the most highly experienced in this field. They have lectured on the subject at conferences and have had articles published in scientific journals.
he capsule is easily swallowed , it contains a camera, lighting, batteries, transmitter and antenna which transmit signals to the recording device.
The procedure, which is ambulatory, begins when the fasting patient arrives at the clinic in the morning and swallows the capsule. A device containing 8 electrodes (similar to an ECG recorder) is fastened around his waist, which transmits the information to the recorder. The patient returns to his ordinary activities and may eat and drink. Eight hours later the patient returns the recorder, which is then attached to a special computer program that, on the following day, allows the physician to view the video film, make a diagnosis and decide on the necessary treatment. The capsule eliminates itself naturally within 3 to 5 days.
This procedure is now covered by the health care system. For appointments, please phone the GI department’s secretarial office. The decision to perform the procedure will be made by a staff physician.
